The Spirit Walkers

The Final book of the Reap the Forgotten Harvest trilogy

Remi Kapo

‘We are the spirit walkers,’ said Equiano, quietly. ‘We tread in the footsteps of them who went before us. We are not pathless, for we know where we are going. But we bear the wounds and scars of generations that went before us, and we carry them on to our next generation.’

It is 1787. The campaign to end slavery is gathering strength across Britain. But the abolitionists face fierce opposition. The West Indies Sugar Cartel is fighting for the profits of the plantation-owners, and they don’t care who gets hurt. Jonas Guinea, a former slave from the Caribbean island of Pertigua, weaves his way through London society, both black and white, as they plan a new Africa, free from European slaving ships. For Matthew Fleming, one of Pertigua’s wealthiest plantation-owners, the eloquent Jonas Guinea is a threat to the very core of his being and must be stopped.

On the Slave Coast of west Africa, the Sodeke family continue to repel the slavers who have stolen their youth and threaten their future. Meanwhile, an ocean away and deep in the mountains of Pertigua, the insurrections continue, organised by the descendants of Captain Sodeke.

The Spirit Walkers brings the Reap the Forgotten Harvest trilogy to its stunning conclusion. It takes us through the abolition of slavery in British colonies, the colonial arrogance of the Berlin Conference, the trenches of the First World War and the horrors of the Second World War, and the birth of new nations as former colonies edge towards independence. But there are prices to be paid as the spirit walkers tread between nations.

Reviews:
The late Maya Angelou wrote: “Reap the Forgotten Harvest can be read for entertainment for it is entertainment. It also can be read for its timeliness. If we are to rid ourselves of the blight of racism and see where we are going, we need to see where we have all come from, and how we became who and what we are. This book will help us.”
